What is Scalloping?

Scalloping is a fun family saltwater activity that happens every year in Florida. July through September people flock here to make memories snorkeling in 3-8′ of crystal clear water to collect and harvest these tasty treats. Our waters have the perfect salinity, temperature and sediment levels for bay scallops to thrive. Therefore, making Steinhatchee the best place to scallop on the Gulf of Mexico! Book your aquatic Easter egg hunt today!

Getting ready to pack for your Scalloping Adventure?

Capt. Melissa provides for you:

  • boat
  • fuel
  • ice
  • bottled water
  • 3-step ladder for getting in/out of the boat
  • Divers Flag (required by law)
  • fishing license
  • safety gear
  • scallop collection bags
  • mask, snorkel and fins to fit most common sizes

What you need to bring:

  • weather-appropriate clothing
  • rash guard or t-shirt while snorkeling (to avoid sunburn)
  • hat, cap or head cover
  • sunglasses (polarized lens enhance the view!)
  • sunscreen (30 SPF+ is recommended no spray sunscreen please)
  • food and beverages
  • water shoes
  • camera (waterproof is ideal)
  • towels

What to Expect?

First, your aquatic Easter egg hunt will begin as a boat ride out to the grass flats of Steinhatchee. Once you have reached the scalloping grounds your Captain will anchor the vessel and put a dive flag up. Next, each person will grab their mask, snorkel, and fins. After that, you will be able to climb down into the water and begin the under water excursion.

Once in the water, guests look to the ocean floor for the shell’s shape or their “blue eyes” which often give their location away. If you locate one, then simply dive down and grab it with your hand (or net) and place it in your mesh bag. Above all, if you find one there’s usually a few more nearby so stay in that area! Your Captain will keep track of your limit, and will help you clean scallops for dinner! Steinhatchee is also heavily populated with restaurants that will cook your catch.
